Job Purpose

Neurosurgeon responsibilities

The Neurosurgeon will diagnose and treat disorders affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems. This includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.

This role requires high expertise in performing complex cranial and spinal surgeries. These include tumor resections, cerebrovascular interventions, and spinal fusions.

Clinical leadership and research

Clinical Practice

• Diagnose and surgically treat a wide range of neurosurgical conditions, including brain tumors, traumatic brain injuries, spinal disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, and functional disorders.
• Perform advanced surgical procedures, including craniotomies, neuroendoscopic surgeries, microdiscectomies, spinal fusions, and carotid endarterectomies.

• Deliver empathetic, compassionate, and culturally competent care to patients and their families, often dealing with complex and life-altering diagnoses.
• Provide clear, thorough explanations of diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, and recovery expectations, ensuring informed consent.
• Ensure meticulous and timely documentation of patient records, complying with all ethical, legal, and hospital standards.

Team Collaboration

• Participate in and often lead multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings with neurologists, neuroradiologists, neuro-oncologists, and rehabilitation specialists.
• Collaborate closely with radiologists to interpret complex imaging (MRI, CT, DSA) and plan image-guided interventions.
• Partner with oncologists to develop integrated treatment plans for patients requiring adjuvant chemo- or radiotherapy.
• Work alongside nursing, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy teams to optimize perioperative, post-operative, and long-term rehabilitative care.

Education, Leadership and Development

• Supervise, mentor, and train junior doctors, residents, and medical students, fostering a culture of learning and clinical excellence.
• Lead training sessions and workshops on advancements in neurosurgical techniques, patient safety, and critical care management.
• Support and drive continuous professional development (CPD) initiatives within the department and hospital.
• Act as a clinical lead for research and innovation within the neuroscience service line.

Research and Innovation

• Design, lead, and participate in clinical research projects to advance neurosurgical treatments and improve surgical outcomes.
• Publish findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed medical journals and present at national and international professional conferences.
• Stay current with global advancements in neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, and neurocritical care, actively implementing evidence-based practices.

Compliance and Governance

• Adhere to hospital protocols, national healthcare regulations, and international standards of care, including those from the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS).
• Ensure strict compliance with infection control measures, patient safety guidelines, and risk management policies.
• Actively participate in clinical audits, peer reviews, and governance activities to uphold the highest standards of quality and safety within the department.

Requirements for This Neurosurgeon Job

• An MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
• A Fellowship in Neurosurgery from a recognized international board or college, such as FRCS(SN), EANS, or equivalent.

• A valid medical license to practice, or eligibility for specialist registration in Nigeria.
