Job Overview

Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist. Location: Abuja, Nigeria. Employment Type: Full-time. Department: Laboratory and Diagnostics. Reports to: Assistant Manager, Laboratory Services. Remuneration: NGN181,000 monthly gross. Application Closing Date: Not Specified.

Job Purpose

A Medical Laboratory Scientist plays a critical role in the diagnostic process — compiling and analyzing body fluids, tissue, and other biological substances to determine whether findings fall within normal or abnormal ranges. This analysis directly informs how physicians diagnose and treat patients, making accuracy and attention to detail essential to the role.

Key Responsibilities

Core Laboratory Functions

  • Gather and organize work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling, sorting specimens, checking labels, logging specimens, arranging reports for delivery, and keeping work surfaces clean and orderly.
  • Perform molecular diagnostics, such as PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing, using both open and closed systems — PCR is a technique used to detect genetic material from viruses or bacteria, commonly used in infectious disease diagnosis.
  • Perform tests across hematology (blood analysis), chemistry, immunology, and microbiology as required.
  • Perform infectious disease testing, including COVID-19 testing.

Engagement

  • Identify and communicate abnormal results promptly by alerting supervisory personnel, the patient, physician, or nurse — timely communication of abnormal findings can be critical to patient outcomes.
  • Communicate with patients and family members in a professional, compassionate, and respectful manner, functioning as an integral part of the healthcare delivery team.

Service Delivery

  • Enhance laboratory services and reputation by taking ownership of new and varied requests, and by proactively identifying opportunities to add value.
  • Operate sophisticated diagnostic equipment and instruments to perform tests and assays in line with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers by following established safety standards and procedures.
  • Maintain quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine maintenance and advanced troubleshooting, calibrating equipment using approved testing procedures, and monitoring quality control measures and protocols throughout.

Requirements

Educational & Professional Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Laboratory Science (or related field) from an accredited university.
  • Certification from the Associate of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (AMLSCN).
  • A current, valid practicing license — relevant additional certifications will be considered an added advantage.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ working experience in a Medical Laboratory, Clinic, or Hospital setting.
  • Additional training and experience in molecular diagnostic techniques, such as PCR, is required.

Key Areas of Note

  • Stay current with relevant medical research, technology, and evidence-based practice by attending continuing education courses and professional meetings, and reading medical journals.
  • Research unusual symptoms and treatment options through consultation with physicians and other medical specialists — reflecting the collaborative, ongoing-learning nature of laboratory science.

Key Skills and Attributes

  • Computer literacy
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Caring, compassionate, dedicated, and professional demeanor
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure
  • A humane, empathetic, and supportive bedside manner
  • Strong leadership and teamwork abilities
  • Problem-solving skills and personal initiative
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail

Work Environment

The work environment described here is representative of what an employee will encounter while performing the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate but may increase at times due to group discussions or activities. EHA Clinics operates a tobacco-free environment.

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Salary: NGN181,000 monthly gross
  • Health Coverage Benefit
  • Performance Bonus
  • 13th Month Pay

Why This Role Matters

Medical Laboratory Scientists form the diagnostic backbone of any healthcare system. Every consultation, treatment plan, and clinical decision often depends on accurate, timely laboratory results. At an organization like EHA Clinics — which positions itself as data-driven and technology-enabled — this role goes beyond routine testing; it requires scientists who can operate advanced diagnostic equipment, maintain rigorous quality standards, and communicate findings clearly within a broader care team. For a laboratory scientist looking to grow within a modern, structured healthcare network, this is an opportunity to apply both technical expertise and patient-centered care in a meaningful way.
