Following her validation by the Senate on 25th September, 2024, President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd veritable Chief Justice of Nigeria. This took place on Monday when the new CJN took the oath of office and signed the oath register at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.
Kekere-Ekun succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who began serving on 27 June 2022 and resigned on 22 August 2024, when he reached the age of 70.
Four of Kekere-Ekun’s predecessors were present at the ceremony on Monday, including her direct predecessor, Justice Ariwoola, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, the first female CJN, Justice Aloma Mukhtar and Justice Walter Onnoghen.
Others present in the Chambers include her family members and the other justices of the Supreme Court.
This is the second time in five weeks that Kekere-Ekun is taking the oath of office.
Tinubu swore her into office in an acting capacity on the 23rd of August, before her approval by the Senate.
