Dr. Carla Prado (University of Alberta, Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science) is recruiting a PhD student for research in clinical trials, nutrition, breast cancer, and aging. The position is in-person at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada), with co-supervision by Dr. Amy Kirkham (Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, University of Toronto).

Project Overview

You’ll work on two major multi-site RCTs:

  1. TEST Trial (Primary Focus – Edmonton Site)
    Investigating time-restricted eating + high protein intake vs. nutrition education in older breast cancer survivors.
    Outcomes: cardiovascular risk, cognitive and physical function.
  2. RESILIENCE Trial (Secondary Focus)
    Studying a digital health intervention for improving body composition and cardiometabolic health in endometrial cancer survivors.

Responsibilities

  • Ethics management, participant recruitment, screening, and assessments
  • Oversee delivery of interventions: nutrition counseling, data collection
  • Conduct physical/cognitive testing, MRI, ultrasound, bloodwork, Garmin smartwatch data
  • Lead and support publications, abstracts, and conference presentations
  • Mentor junior trainees and collaborate with research staff and students

Candidate Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Exercise Physiology, Human Physiology, Nutrition, or related field
  • GPA ≥ 3.3/4.0 (B+) in last 60 credits
  • Research experience with human subjects (clinical/vulnerable populations preferred)
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • English language proficiency

Preferred:

  • Master’s (thesis-based) in a related field
  • Certified Exercise Physiologist or Registered Dietitian
  • Skills in MRI, calorimetry, blood collection, or other advanced data methods
