WASSCE addresses false claims about resit examinations

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has refuted claims circulating in some Nigerian media outlets that it has introduced a resit examination scheduled for January and February for candidates needing make-up papers in the WASSCE.

WAEC clarified that the report did not originate from Nigeria and is not intended for Nigerian candidates. Instead, it pertains to Ghana and is specifically for Ghanaian candidates.

In the viral report, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, cited as the source, is a Ghanaian official working at WAEC’s Ghana office.

According to Tribune Online, WAEC Nigeria has been conducting its first series of exams for private candidates since 2017, under the administration of Mr. Olu Adenipekun as Head of the National Office—a system that Ghana has only recently adopted this year.

Mr. Adenipekun’s successor, Patrick Areghan, who retired two years ago, maintained the format, and it continues under the current HNO, Dr. Amos Dangut.

This first series of exams, distinct from a resit, brings WAEC Nigeria’s annual examination schedules to three: the longstanding May/June WASSCE for school-based candidates, the November/December exam (formerly GCE) for private candidates, and the first series for private candidates introduced in 2017.

Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, Head of Public Affairs for WAEC Nigeria, confirmed to Tribune Online that the report does not pertain to Nigerian candidates and is misleading.

She clarified that WAEC Nigeria’s first series of WASSCE for private candidates, held annually between February and March, remains unchanged. In addition, Mrs. Adesina assured that the organization is fully prepared to conduct this year’s edition as planned.
