Why UNIPORT Lecturers Declared the Strike

According to the UNIPORT ASUU branch, the decision followed concerns over incomplete payment of lecturers’ salaries.

The union then stated the action as UNIPORT ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Incomplete Salaries and Unpaid Allowances.

The union also raised concerns about unpaid responsibility allowances to lecturers. It also highlighted non-payment of responsibility allowances to members under CONMESS and CONHESS, including those in School of Health Sciences.

ASUU alleged that its members were excluded from monthly responsibility allowance payments. These payments were received by members of other unions for more than two years. Additionally, the claims were contained in a statement signed by the branch secretary, Tarila Amakoromo.

48-Hour Deadline Expired

The development followed an emergency congress held by the union on September 11, 2026.

During the meeting, ASUU gave the university administration 48 working hours, with the deadline ending at midnight on September 15, to address the outstanding issues.

The union said university management met with its representatives on September 11 and promised to respond to the demands before the deadline. However, according to ASUU, the deadline expired without the issues being resolved.

Following the expiration of the deadline, the union held another emergency congress on September 16 and declared the indefinite strike.

What the Strike Means for Academic Activities

ASUU directed its members to withdraw from academic and official duties during the strike.

According to the union’s directive, members are not expected to conduct lectures or examinations, invigilate examinations, participate in official assignments, or attend statutory meetings while the strike continues.

The union has also established a Strike Monitoring Team to monitor compliance across the university’s main campus and other centers.

Salary and Allowance Issues at the Centre of the Dispute

However, UNIPORT ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Incomplete Salaries and Unpaid Allowances.

The dispute centers mainly on payments due to lecturers.

The union’s stated concerns include:

  • Incomplete salaries for June, July, and August 2026.
  • Incomplete payment of responsibility allowances.
  • Non-payment of responsibility allowances to members under CONMESS and CONHESS in the School of Health Sciences.
  • Alleged exclusion of ASUU members from monthly responsibility allowance payments made to members of other unions for more than two years.

These issues have now resulted in the local indefinite industrial action at the University of Port Harcourt.

What Happens Next?

However, the duration of the strike depends on developments. This depends on progress between the university administration and the ASUU branch regarding the outstanding issues.

For students and other members of the university community, any resolution of the dispute could determine when academic and official activities resume.

As of the reports announcing the strike, ASUU members had been directed to remain away from the specified academic and official duties until further developments.

Final Thoughts

The indefinite strike at the University of Port Harcourt follows a dispute over incomplete salary payments and responsibility allowances.

With the union having already issued a 48-hour deadline before declaring the action, attention will now be on discussions between the university administration and the lecturers’ union as they seek to resolve the outstanding issues.

Students and staff are expected to follow official announcements from the university and relevant authorities for updates on the situation.
