Job Summary

Operational availability for pharmaceutical duties is a minimum of 8 hours a day (40 hours a week), plus emergencies and a minimum of 3 hours on Saturdays and public holidays, under the Pharmacist’s supervision. The position works in tandem with other professionals of the Division for effective provision of services, and looks up to the hierarchy for direction on policy matters. The position reports directly to the Manager, Pharmacy Services, while supervising the Pharmacy Technician and other Locum Pharmacists. Compliance with the rules of relevant regulatory authorities is required.

Key Responsibilities for This Pharmacist Job

• Dispense drugs, document, and monitor drug usage for effective re-stocking.
• Give advice and drug counseling to patients.
• Carry out periodic stock-taking of drugs and materials for accountability.
• Inform doctors of available drugs and prescription patterns.
• Estimate the quantity and value of drug purchases.
• Follow up on ordered drugs and receive supplied drugs and materials.
• Document the reception and issuance of drugs and materials in the stock management software.
• Ensure the security of the pharmacy.
• Work closely with medical and nursing staff on the wards to ensure patients receive the most appropriate treatments, advising on the selection of medicines, dose, and route of administration.
• Improve medication use and optimize medication-related outcomes.
• Manage medication shortages by liaising with PHC pharmacy and using imprest funds for emergency situations.
• Monitor prescriptions, intervene where needed, and carry out medicine reconciliation.
• Report adverse effects of medication and support pharmacovigilance.
• Train and supervise interns and industrial trainees.
