Here’s what the FSB stage actually looked like for the most recent 2026/2027 cycle, based on the Federal Scholarship Board’s official advert.

Announcement. When the CSC opens a new cycle, the Federal Ministry of Education publishes a formal notice through the FSB on the education.gov.ng website. This is separate from anything posted on the CSC’s own site, so if you’re only checking cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk, you can miss it entirely.

Application window. For the 2026/2027 cycle, the FSB opened applications on September 2, 2025, with a deadline of October 14, 2025. That’s roughly six weeks, and it typically closes well before many applicants start thinking about the CSC’s own deadlines.

Eligibility requirements specific to Nigeria. These go beyond the CSC’s general eligibility page:

• Master’s applicants need a First Class or Second Class Upper Division in their first degree
• PhD applicants need at least a Second Class Lower Division
• A valid NYSC discharge or exemption certificate is required
• Applicants must have already secured admission offers from at least two UK universities
• PhD applicants must include a supporting statement from their prospective UK host university

A procedural detail almost nobody mentions. Completed forms must be printed before they’re submitted online. It’s a small step, but it trips people up if they’re expecting a fully digital process.

Interview stage. Candidates who pass the FSB’s initial screening move to a nomination interview in Abuja. For the 2026/2027 cycle, interviews ran from November 3 to 7, at the FSB’s offices opposite the Federal Ministry of Justice.

No fees, ever. The FSB has repeatedly stated that this process is free of charge and has warned applicants against anyone requesting payment. If someone asks you to pay to be considered, that’s a scam, not the FSB.

Why the Federal Scholarship Board Is the Real Commonwealth Scholarship Nigeria Requirement

Most guides treat the CSC as the hard part and the national agency as a formality. For Nigerian applicants, it’s often the reverse.

The FSB applies its own eligibility bar that has nothing to do with the CSC’s general criteria: your NYSC status, whether you already hold two UK admission offers, and whether you can produce a printed, signed application on time. A strong CSC profile won’t help you if you never make it past the FSB.
